Koret Children's Quarter

Historic Photo of Children's Playground

With the generous support from the Koret Foundation, the Children's Playground has reopened.

The July Ribbon cutting of the Koret Children's Quarter marks the completion of a $3.8 million renovation project at the popular and historic site located in the southeast corner of the park.

Playground History
The Koret Children's Quarter, formerly known as Children's Playground, was originally built in 1887 and is commonly thought to be the nation's first public playground. In that era, the idea of providing a dedicated space solely for youth recreation was unique and groundbreaking. Since then, arguably every child from around the world who has visited San Francisco, and especially those who grew up in The City over the past several generations, has played here.

Golden Gate Park Carrousel
A carrousel has been in Golden Gate Park near the Koret Children's Quarter, the oldest children's playground in the nation, since the playground opened in 1888. For more information on the history of the Golden Gate Carrousel click here.
